A little bit of background

Mitch Altman is a San Francisco-based hacker and inventor, best known for co-founding 3ware (with J. Peter Herz and Jim MacDonald), his pioneering work in Virtual Reality at VPL Research and inventing TV-B-Gone. He is also President and CTO of Cornfield Electronics.

He found out that open source hardware is uber cool after going to a hacker convention that opened his eyes towards sharing the data with others. Then together with Limor Fried made TV-B-Gone that was a great succes and all sorts of kits that he shared open source. Brain machine followed and many others making him one of the key people in the open source hardware movement.
